On Thursday, 24th November, five of our students took part in the Juvenes Translatores competition run by the European Commission. Five students had two hours to translate a text from one EU language to another. Dutch to English was popular, but also we had English to German and Italian to English. Making a good translation is a difficult and creative exercise and all our students wrestled with the problems involved and worked hard to produce the best result.

This year, Anna Miraglia and Bianca Heiden helped with preparation and the running of the competition. Next year, they will take over the project. We do little ‘translation’ in our school in the traditional sense. We feel that a good translation is also a creative piece of work and deserves serious attention and acclaim, so we are pleased to have the opportunity to offer to our pupils this experience and raise the profile of translating. I have copies of all the texts to translate. If anyone wants to see the copies, email me and I’ll send them to you: stuart.idell@teacher.eursc.eu or you can contact Anna or Bianca.

The competition this year was open to students born in 1999. The good news is that the winners from each EU country are invited to an awards ceremony in Brussels – unfortunately for the student the bad news is that he or she should be accompanied by one of the teachers…

All those born in 2000 are getting ready for the competition next year!
